The Huron Historic Gaol is a unique octagonal building which served as the County Jail from its opening in 1841 until 1972. The Gaol is now a National Historic Site. The building originally housed the County Courts and Council Chambers, as well as serving as Gaol and House of Refuge. At the time of construction, it was viewed as a model for humanitarian prison design.
